History of The Department

Faculty of Economics at the Istanbul University was established in 1936 and leading to the teaching and learning of economics in Turkey, has been qualified to be an examplary. Faculty of Economics, as one of Turkey's oldest faculty, on the one hand has been raising scientists, on the other hand has gained significant administrators to Turkey's economy. While some of the faculty graduates have come to important places in other sectors of the economy, some have served as senior managers in the sub-sectors of the tourism industry such as accommodation, travel, transportation, food and beverage or have made significant contributions to tourism by making various investments in this field. With the understanding of the importance of tourism, the necessity of providing a more specific education for this sector has emerged and in 1969, the Economic Geography and Tourism Institute was established within the Faculty of Economics. With the establishment of the institute, graduate programs related to tourism were opened and the sector was supported in scientific terms. Names such as Abdullah Türkoğlu and Kubilay Baysal, who are doyen in tourism, have contributed greatly to the opening of this institute. Within the Faculty of Economics, which has raised important names in the field of tourism and has pioneered the opening of tourism department in many universities in Turkey, the Tourism Management Department was established in the 1998-1999 academic year. However, the department was closed after continuing its education and training life for a while, and it was decided to reopen in 2005. The Tourism Management department, which still continues its education and training activities, is preferred mostly in the first place by the candidates who want to study in the field of tourism. It contributes to the science of tourism not only by undergraduate education, but also by accepting students in the field of master's and doctorate degrees. Prof. Dr. Füsun İSTANBULLU DİNÇER, who has been a great contributer for opening the department and ensuring its continuity, has been the head of the department since the day of the education of the department started.
